This week brought hard news, but also quiet signs of wonder, care, and good sense. Here are four stories from the past seven days, explained simply, to share at your family table.

1. A possible new dwarf planet beyond Pluto

Far out past Pluto, in the cold edges of our solar system, astronomers have spotted something new. On October 27, scientists working with the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile announced a possible dwarf planet with the temporary name 2026 ED138.

Astronomer Matthew Holman of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian found it on October 13 while searching through Rubin images with software built to find faraway moving objects. The object showed up in more than 20 images taken between March and July of this year.

It is about 46 times farther from the Sun than Earth is. Scientists estimate it is somewhere between 600 and 1,500 kilometers across (roughly 370 to 930 miles). Nobody knows its exact size yet. To be called a dwarf planet, an object must be big enough for its own gravity to pull it into a round shape. More observations, likely with infrared telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope, will be needed to know for sure.

Holman described his first reaction as “excited disbelief.” The sky still holds surprises for anyone patient enough to keep looking.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
Psalm 19:1 (KJV)

Family idea: On the next clear night, step outside together and look up for five minutes.

2. Sardinia invites families to dinner without screens

On the Italian island of Sardinia, 15 restaurants have signed up for a one-month pilot called A tavola senza schermi, which means “At the table without screens.” It begins in early November.

The idea came from Anna Cau, the island’s ombudsman for children and teens, working with the regional branch of Fipe-Confcommercio, a hospitality association. Organizers first hoped for eight restaurants and ended up with nearly twice that many.

Families are encouraged to set their devices aside. In return, they receive a “reunion kit” with games, drawing activities, and ideas for keeping children busy while the food is on its way. The kit was shaped with input from Italy’s federation of pediatricians. According to Euro Weekly News, it is not a strict ban: parents are asked to put away their own phones too, and families can agree on exceptions ahead of time.

You do not need to live in Italy to try this. A phone basket by the door at dinner costs nothing.

3. New protections for children in the United Kingdom

On October 29, new rules took effect across the UK to keep vapes and nicotine products away from young people. According to the UK Department of Health and Social Care, it is now illegal to sell any vaping product or non-medicinal nicotine product, including nicotine pouches, strips, and “pearls,” to anyone under 18, whether in a shop or online.

For the first time, adults also commit an offence if they buy or try to buy these products for someone under 18. Vending machine sales are also banned.

For parents anywhere, it is a good moment to talk calmly with older children about what these products are and why their health is worth protecting.

4. U.S. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3

For our readers in the United States, today, Tuesday, November 3, is Election Day for the 2026 midterm elections. Polling hours are not the same everywhere; they are set by each state and locality, so check the hours for your own polling place.

On Election Day, many places assign voters to a polling place based on their home address, or precinct. Your state or county election office is the best place to confirm where you vote and what you need to bring, since rules such as ID requirements differ from state to state. Vote.gov, the official U.S. government voter site, lets you pick your state and points you to official information, including how to check your registration.

If you are eligible, make a simple plan: know where, when, and how you will go.

Holding the week together

A distant world waiting to be found. Families looking at each other over a meal. Laws meant to protect children. Citizens taking part in civic life. None of these stories is loud, but each points to something good.

The same God who set the stars in place knows your name and walks with you.

Through every storm, we rise together.

Which of this week’s stories would you most like to talk about with your family, and why?
