‘A Proud Family Wizmas’ Trailer: Stop-Motion Special Hits Disney+ Nov. 14

Penny Proud takes over for Santa in a new song-filled, stop-motion holiday special. Here’s what parents should know about the cast, story and content ratings.

A decorated Christmas tree in a living room

Penny Proud is trading her usual school drama for a sleigh. Disney+ has released the trailer for A Proud Family Wizmas, a song-filled, stop-motion holiday special that premieres Saturday, Nov. 14, on the streaming service.

The special brings back the animated family from The Proud Family, whose revival series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, streams on Disney+. This time, the characters are rendered in the handmade look of classic Christmas specials, which TVLine compared to the Rankin/Bass holiday favorites many parents grew up with.

What the special is about

According to Disney, Penny “inadvertently destroys Christmas as we know it” and then reluctantly agrees to save it for the children of Emilyville and the world. Popped News reported that in the story, Penny is frustrated by how commercial Christmas has become, which leads Santa to quit. She then takes over his job, with help from his elves.

The trailer, released this week, shows chimney climbs, a trip to the North Pole, reindeer, elves and chases through a shopping mall.

Who’s in it

The original voice cast returns, led by Kyla Pratt as Penny, Tommy Davidson as Oscar, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy, JoMarie Payton as Suga Mama and Cedric the Entertainer as Uncle Bobby. Karen Malina White, Soleil Moon Frye and Alisa Reyes are also back as Penny’s friends Dijonay, Zoey and LaCienega.

Disney announced a guest cast that includes Anderson .Paak as a mall elf, Lil Rel Howery as Bubble, JB Smoove as a mall Santa, Tone Loc, Luenell, Earthquake, Affion Crockett and Karlous Miller. Gabrielle Union returns as Talia Rogue.

Series creator Bruce W. Smith directs, with co-director David Brooks. Ralph Farquhar wrote the script, and Kurt Farquhar, the show’s longtime composer, wrote six new original songs. The stop-motion animation was done by Portland-based studio HouseSpecial for Disney Television Animation.

Parents’ guide: content and ratings

Disney has not announced an official TV rating or runtime for the special. Here is what parents can go by in the meantime:

  • The series rating: Disney+ lists The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder as TV-PG.
  • Common Sense Media recommends the revival series for ages 10 and up. Its review notes no bad language and only mild cartoon slapstick, but says the show deals with puberty, dating and crushes, and includes one scene of innuendo involving the parents. It also covers themes of activism and different kinds of families that some parents may want to discuss with kids.
  • Holiday tone: Based on the trailer and Disney’s description, the special is built around a comedic Santa-and-elves story with music, which suggests a lighter, more all-ages approach than the regular series. Parents of younger children may still want to preview it.
  • Faith and the holiday: The plot centers on Santa and the commercial side of Christmas rather than the religious meaning of the holiday.

More family holiday viewing on the way

The special arrives during a busy month for family entertainment. A Parenting Patch guide published on Yahoo lists a SuperKitties Thanksgiving special on Disney+, Paramount’s Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol in theaters Nov. 13, and Disney Animation’s Hexed in theaters Nov. 25. Families looking for more streaming options can also check our parents’ guide to Netflix’s A Dog’s Perfect Christmas, and our guide to the PG-rated The Cat in the Hat now in theaters.

Fans who want to catch up before Nov. 14 can stream The Proud Family, The Proud Family Movie and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder on Disney+, according to Disney.

Why it matters for families

Stop-motion holiday specials have been a family tradition for generations, and this one connects that old-school style with characters many of today’s parents watched as kids. That makes it a possible shared-viewing pick across ages, as long as parents check the final rating and keep the series’ older-kid themes in mind.

What to watch next

Disney is expected to post the special’s official rating and runtime closer to its Nov. 14 premiere. Upstormed News will keep following the season’s family-friendly holiday releases.
