This week brought a serious health challenge in Africa, a close count in Israel’s election, a rescue that began with a wrong turn, and a surprise from deep in England’s past. Here are four stories worth knowing, explained simply.
1. Ebola outbreak in Central Africa passes 10,000 cases
The Ebola outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May has now passed 10,000 cases, with nearly 5,000 deaths, according to figures reported this week by the World Health Organization and Congolese authorities. More than 2,600 people have recovered.
This outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or treatment. It is the DRC’s 17th and largest Ebola outbreak, and the second-largest in the world after the West Africa epidemic of 2014 to 2016. It has spread to eight provinces, and cases have also been reported in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.
There are signs of hope. Last Friday, trials known as TUMAINI began in Bunia to test whether an existing Ebola vaccine, Ervebo, can protect against this strain. A United Nations fund has given Kenya more than $2 million to prepare, and the WHO says progress is being made, while urging that efforts continue. Health workers on the front lines need our prayers.
2. Israel’s election count nears the end
Israelis voted on October 27, and the count continued this week. As of Wednesday, October 28, with about 90% of votes counted, The Times of Israel reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc had 53 seats, a bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot had 48, and Arab-led parties had a combined 19, a record for them. A governing majority needs 61 of the Knesset’s 120 seats.
Likud won the most seats of any single party, followed by Eisenkot’s Yashar party. Hundreds of thousands of special ballots, mainly from soldiers and diplomats, were still being counted, and final official results are expected on November 4. These numbers are partial and may change. Coalition talks will decide who forms the next government.
3. A stranger’s wrong turn saves a foster family of 14
In Lyerly, Georgia, James and Larita Burke have fostered more than 500 children over 15 years. On a recent Saturday night, Mr. Burke fell asleep in his recliner while his wife, 11 children and a grandchild slept in their beds.
Meanwhile, a man named Casey was driving home to Alabama with his son. His GPS sent him onto a highway he had never driven before. From a hilltop, he spotted the Burkes’ house on fire. He rushed inside and woke Mr. Burke, and together with Burke’s son they got every child out safely.
The house and two cars were destroyed, and the cause is under investigation. Mrs. Burke told reporters, “We wouldn’t have made it.” Mr. Burke said he is “so thankful” the stranger came their way. Their community has rallied around them, and the Burkes hope to keep fostering once they rebuild.
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)
4. A new “rhino-sized” dinosaur named in England
Scientists at the Natural History Museum in London have named a new species of plant-eating dinosaur, Paludohadros proudlovii. It lived about 125 million years ago in marshy lowlands in what is now southern England.
Its partial skeleton was found back in 2001 at a brickworks in Surrey. The animal was about 16 feet long and weighed 1.5 to 2 tons, and it was probably still young. It could have grown to about twice that size. The study was published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. It is a good reminder that some discoveries take patience: these bones waited 25 years to be fully understood.
A thought to carry
Some weeks, the news feels heavy. But even beside hard headlines, we find people stepping into danger to help, scientists working for cures and communities rallying around their neighbors. Let us pray for those facing sickness and uncertainty, and look for our own chance to be the “wrong turn” that turns out right for someone.
