U.S. Strikes Iranian Air Defenses on Qeshm Island, Launches Border Task Force

President Trump called Friday’s strike on an Iranian air defense system near Hormuz “minor,” as CENTCOM unveiled a new task force and Qatar said peace talks are still alive.

The United States carried out new military strikes on Iran on Friday, hitting an air defense system on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump confirmed the attack Friday evening and called it “minor.” They are the first U.S. strikes since Tuesday’s midterm elections, and they come as Qatar tries to broker a deal to end a war that is now more than eight months old.

On Saturday, U.S. Central Command also announced a new team to watch Iran’s land borders. Iran’s military answered with a warning that any further attack would get an immediate response.

What happened on Qeshm Island

Iranian state media reported two missile strikes in the Suza area of Qeshm, a large island in the narrow waterway where much of the world’s oil passes. Iran’s IRNA news agency said local witnesses heard an aircraft and then saw two projectiles hit the area.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the target was a small anti-aircraft system and that U.S. forces knocked it out “in about 15 minutes, maybe five.” He gave few other details. Iran’s army said, through state broadcaster IRIB, that its air defenses shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone over the island. U.S. officials have not confirmed that claim, and CENTCOM described the situation as relatively calm.

According to The Times of Israel, U.S. officials believe most of Iran’s air defenses were destroyed or badly damaged during Israel’s June 2025 bombing campaign and early in the current war, and they expect Iran to try to rebuild them. The Telegraph has reported that Iran is negotiating to buy Russia’s S-400 air defense system.

A new task force and a $20 million reward

On Saturday, CENTCOM announced Task Force Iron Gate, a team of 20 civilian and military personnel based in Tampa, Florida. According to FOX 26 Houston, the group will monitor Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea to stop illegal shipments of advanced weapons, dual-use technology, sanctioned materials and money. It supports the U.S. naval blockade in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman, which CENTCOM says has kept Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil.

Late Friday, CENTCOM also offered a reward of up to $20 million, plus possible relocation, for information about Iran’s nuclear program, Al Jazeera reported.

Iran’s response

Iranian army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said Saturday that Iran’s forces are stronger than they were when the war began and that any response to attacks would come immediately and without geographic limits. Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security official, pledged a devastating response if the U.S. restarts full hostilities, FOX 26 reported.

The strike follows days of tension in the Gulf. Earlier this week, Iran said several tankers struck mines near Hormuz, as Upstormed News reported in Iran says 4 tankers hit mines near Hormuz as Trump weighs larger strike. Tehran has also argued that the midterm results show Americans oppose the war, a claim covered in Iran says U.S. vote rejected war as new tanker fires hit Hormuz.

Talks still alive, Qatar says

Even as missiles flew, diplomacy continued. Trump told reporters, “We are talking to Iran. We have been,” and said Iran wants to make a deal, though he gave no details. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, on Saturday rejected reports that the U.S.-Iran talks had collapsed.

Qatar has given Iran new proposals on its nuclear program, which Tehran is reviewing. According to The Times of Israel, Iran says it will not negotiate on nuclear issues until the U.S. meets core demands, including ending the blockade, lifting sanctions, releasing frozen assets and paying war compensation. Regional officials described a possible step-by-step bridge deal: the U.S. would lift the blockade and release some funds, Iran would let international inspectors visit bombed sites, and Hormuz would later reopen. The White House declined to comment on the Qatari proposals.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran holds 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, a short technical step from weapons grade. Trump has insisted that any agreement must settle the nuclear question.

At home, the war’s cost is part of the debate in Washington, where some lawmakers are weighing how to handle war spending, as covered in Democrats weigh using Dec. 11 funding deadline to push back on Iran war spending.

Why it matters for families

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for oil. Fighting there has pushed up fuel prices, and many military families have loved ones deployed in the region. Whether these limited strikes stay small, or lead to a wider fight, could affect gas prices and the safety of U.S. service members.

What to watch next

  • Whether Iran follows through on its threat of an immediate response.
  • Whether CENTCOM confirms or denies Iran’s claim that it shot down a U.S. drone.
  • Iran’s answer to Qatar’s nuclear proposals and any sign of a first-step deal.
  • Further reports on Iran’s talks with Russia over new air defenses.
