Greg Heffley is packing his bags again. Disney has released a new trailer and poster for Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway, an animated holiday comedy coming to Disney+ on Friday, December 4, 2026.

If your house has a shelf full of well-worn Wimpy Kid books, this one may already be on your family’s December list. Here is what we know, plus a simple parents’ guide to help you decide if it is a good fit for your kids.

What Is the Story?

According to Disney’s press release, holiday stress pushes the Heffley family to suddenly book a trip to a tropical resort, much to Greg’s annoyance. The family soon finds out the vacation is not what it promised. As Disney puts it, “Can their trip be saved, or will their island getaway end in disaster?”

The film is based on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway, the twelfth book in Jeff Kinney’s series, first published in November 2017. Kinney, the creator of the books, wrote and produced the movie. Matt Danner directs.

Who Is in the Cast?

Disney lists these voice actors:

  • Jacob Isaac Peterson as Greg Heffley
  • Chris Diamantopoulos as Frank, Greg’s dad
  • Erica Cerra as Susan, Greg’s mom
  • Hunter Dillon as big brother Rodrick
  • Gracen Newton as little brother Manny
  • Jude Zarzaur as best friend Rowley
  • Fred Armisen as the Director of Fun
  • Beau Bridges as Captain Stubbard

A December Tradition on Disney+

This is the latest in a run of animated Wimpy Kid movies on Disney+. The first arrived on December 3, 2021, followed by Rodrick Rules in December 2022, Christmas: Cabin Fever in December 2023 and The Last Straw in December 2025. Matt Danner also directed The Last Straw. For many families, an early-December Heffley movie has become a cozy kickoff to the season.

Parents’ Guide

Official rating: Disney’s press release does not state a rating. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as PG. Please check the Disney+ listing for the official rating closer to release.

Content notes: No detailed review of the film is available yet. For a preview, Common Sense Media’s review of the book rates it for ages 8 and up. Their notes on the book mention:

  • Mild scary moments: Greg imagines travel disasters, such as plane trouble and sharks, and a box jellyfish frightens swimmers.
  • Language: none noted in the book.
  • Potty humor: plenty of bathroom jokes and drawings.
  • Grown-up details: adults drinking at restaurants and the resort, some kissing, and one brief beach joke some parents may find awkward (nothing is shown).
  • Messages: family time is an adventure, even when it does not go as planned, and losing your temper leads to trouble.

Keep in mind that movies often change things from the book, so the film may include more or less of these moments. Greg is also not always a role model. He worries a lot and makes poor choices, which is part of the fun and also a good chance for a family talk.

Talk About It Together

Every family has had a trip that went sideways. A flat tire, a rainy beach day, a missed flight. Often those are the stories we laugh about years later. After watching, you might ask:

  1. What went wrong for the Heffleys, and how did they handle it?
  2. When has one of our own plans fallen apart? What did we learn?
  3. What helps our family stay kind to each other when we are stressed?

The best part of any getaway is not the resort. It is the people beside us. Scripture reminds us of that simple joy:

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Psalm 133:1 (KJV)
